Unpacking the Benchmarking Melbourne 2023 report

On 13 July 2023, we unpacked our Benchmarking Melbourne 2023 report at JLL’s stunning offices.

The report, produced by The Business of Cities for Committee for Melbourne and JLL, benchmarks Melbourne against 20 global peer cities and was launched on 2 March at The Melbourne Summit.

The Committee’s Director of Policy & Advocacy, Leanne Edwards, broke down the report’s main themes including the ‘tale of two cities’ which has resulted in unequal access to green spaces, public transport and amenities, and the implications of the imbalance between Melbourne’s perception metrics and its performance metrics.

While temporary visitors tend to have a positive experience of Melbourne, there is a performance gap for residents which shows a failure of the city to live up to expectations. As our population increases, it is imperative we understand all components that make a thriving city, improve Melbourne’s brand, and deliver on connecting people across Greater Melbourne to what they want and need.

Our panellists Dr Jonathan Spear – CEO, Infrastructure Victoria, Sheena Frost – CEO, Hume City Council and Craig Shute – Managing Director, Victoria, JLL, discussed Melbourne’s need for more homes in the inner suburbs, attracting and retaining talent, whole city connectivity and environmental outcomes.
