01.04.2021The Committee for Melbourne’s inaugural Docklands Gift has been run and won!

Our Future Focus Group Class of 2019-2020 delivered the inaugural Docklands Gift Athletics Carnival at Ron Barassi Snr Park last Saturday week. The event grew from an idea of holding a community event that showcased what Melbourne Docklands has to offer – open spaces, multiple dining options, retail aplenty and close proximity to the CBD.

The FFG Docklands Gift Project Team partnered with the Victorian Athletic League, the City of Melbourne and the Docklands Sports Club to create a new running event that would form part of the running fixture. The day started with a bang, as students at the newly opened Docklands Primary School were invited to participate in a number of running drills and races, culminating in the Docklands Primary School Gift that was run over 100 metres. The event saw children from the local community race together – from Prep to Grade 6 – using a handicap system to ensure that every child participating had a chance of winning.

The main program then kicked off from 11am, seeing around 250 athletes and their families and friends descend onto Ron Barassi Snr Park for a multitude of races that ranged in distance from 70 to 1,500 metres. The weather gods smiled upon the event and, even with the shadow of COVID, things ran smoothly and there was a great community atmosphere. There were plenty of comments on it being a great day and commitments to be back next year.

The 2022-2023 FFG Program is expected to start in February 2022 and run for 15 months. Promotion of the program will be between July and September, completed nominations will be sought by the end of September, interviews will be conducted in October and participants will be confirmed in early November.
