23.10.2024SCT Logistics celebrates 50 years of delivering for Australia

Longstanding Committee for Melbourne member SCT Logistics celebrated its 50th anniversary in a special gathering attended by family, friends, clients, customers and staff.
SCT, or Specialised Container Transport, was established in 1974 by Peter Smith, whose sons Geoff and Glenn now run the business.
Peter began his long association with the transport industry by purchasing his first truck in the early 1960s. His first company, Cubico, was sold to Mayne Nickless before Peter established SCT.
The company started as a freight forwarder and became Australia’s first non-government rail operator in 1995.
Specialising in east-west transport, SCT now delivers thousands of tonnes of dry and refrigerated food on trains between Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane, playing a crucial role in the lives of Australians.
It is also active in motorsport, with its 50th anniversary enshrined in special livery on Brad Jones Racing’s V8 Supercars car, featuring all the names of its 1,100 staff.
The company continues to grow and expand its services, most recently opening a new Southeast Melbourne cross-dock facility.
Managing Director Geoff Smith said: “With the challenging business environment that we operate in today, marking our 50-year anniversary is a great opportunity to celebrate both the SCT and the family achievement.
“It is an honour for the Smith family to thank those that have contributed to the success and longevity of the SCT business.”
Chairman Mark Stone said: “The success of SCT has occurred under relentless competition from multinational and national competitors. This is a remarkable achievement.”
SCT has an been active member of the Committee and Victorian Chamber of Commerce, with Mr Stone a former Chief Executive of the Chamber.
The company most recently participated in our Youth Activating Youth (YAY) employment program and Careers Services Policy Paper, contributing its insights into the needs of future skills and employment in Australia.
The Committee and Chamber were on hand to jointly unveil the company’s new Altona freight facility in 2022 and were proud to be invited to the company’s 50th celebrations.
Committee Chief Executive Scott Veenker said: “Congratulations to the Smith family – especially Peter, Geoff and Glenn – and chairman Mark Stone, on this amazing milestone, and we look forward to continuing our work with you all for the next 50 years.”
