06.05.2021Grimshaw overhauls Melbourne Airport’s T2 Arrivals Hall
Two of our members – Melbourne Airport and Grimshaw – have come together to transform our airport’s International Arrivals Hall, in time for the start of the trans-Tasman travel bubble mid-April.
Designed by Grimshaw to meet the expected quality and atmosphere of a contemporary arrivals hall, the T2 Arrivals’ thoughtful refurbishment creates a strong sense of place, and is a significant investment in our city’s visitability.
Eliciting a welcoming, inherently ‘Melbourne’ experience – where visitors start their adventures, and Melburnians feel at ‘home’ – the light-filled, revamped interior improves the overall journey experience by providing additional capacity for arriving passengers and better wayfinding and increased circulation space.
Adding extra warmth to the space, a feature wall made up of 1.6km of locally-sourced timber, is carved out to read ‘Melbourne’ and illuminated, to celebrate our city and curfew-free airport. The provision of vertical transport, reconfigured retail units and an upgrade of all furniture, provides greater amenity and comfort for passengers.
