The Committee continues to be a prominent advocate for the evolution of skills training and development.  We recently made a submission to the Victorian Government’s inquiry into sustainable employment for disadvantaged workers where we focus on the need to nurture peoples’ soft skills and recommends the development of micro-credential qualifications that are recognised by the government and industry. These qualifications could assist disadvantaged job seekers in developing their technical and soft skills, and provide a pathway to sustained employment.

These recommendations are consistent with our submission earlier this year to the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Review, in which we recommended the AQF formally recognise micro-credentials to ease transitions across the workforce, more rapidly fill skills gaps and promote lifelong learning.

The ultimate vision must be for Melbourne to develop a workforce with a new, diverse range of skill sets and capabilities as we attempt to transform our city into a high-tech, value-adding knowledge economy.

The findings of the Victorian Government inquiry and the AQF Review will be released later this year. The Committee will have more to say upon the release of these findings and will keep members abreast of developments.
