29.06.2020Citywide creates employment opportunities for hundreds of COVID-displaced workers for community cleaning programs

Committee member Citywide is hiring hundreds of workers to be mobilised on COVID-19 cleansing and sanitisation services to help prepare communities across metropolitan Melbourne for a return to normal life.

As part of Working for Victoria, a state government initiative in collaboration with member City of Melbourne, an initial 210 workers displaced from their original jobs have been recruited to fast-track the cleansing and disinfecting of public areas, with more job placements scheduled.

The new workforce is being funded by the state government and will be mobilised to deliver disinfecting services of popular areas and communal touch points such as public seating, bike hoops and street litter bins, initially across City of Port Phillip, Maribyrnong and Stonnington councils.

“This is a great opportunity for our business, our customers and the many people who have been displaced from several of Australia’s most affected industries,” Duncan Reid, Executive of Operations, said.

“As the result of a local state government initiative to create ‘instant’ employment and to mobilise emergency sanitisation programs, it creates an opportunity to deliver additional services with all-round benefits for all our customers, communities and our business.”

As well as creating new employment opportunities for hundreds of people, Citywide has significantly scaled up its regular commercial and municipal cleansing solutions to deliver ongoing sanitisation services to help maintain healthy, safe communities, neighbourhoods and facilities.

Preventing further spread of the coronavirus and preparing communities for a return to normal is the driving force behind the metro-wide cleansing effort.
