Delivering affordable housing

In early 2021, Committee for Melbourne prepared recommendations in advance of the release of the Victorian Government’s 10-year social and affordable housing strategy. The Committee called upon the Victorian Government to create a 40-year social and affordable housing strategy which includes community awareness, data collection, target setting and the development of policies that will increase the supply of much needed housing.

Ahead of the strategy’s launch, the Committee recently held a forum to explore possible policy responses to increase the supply of social and affordable housing in Melbourne and Victoria. Our panel of experts including Jane Hodder, Partner, Herbert Smith Freehills and Chair of Committee for Melbourne’s Housing Mix Taskforce, Sarah Slattery, Managing Director, Slattery, Kris Daff, Managing Director, Assemble and Karen Janiszewski, Director, Urbanxchange discussed:

  • key causes of the housing affordability crisis;
  • the spectrum of affordable housing needs;
  • direct and indirect policy interventions by government; and
  • innovative models that have been adopted for the supply of affordable housing.

The Committee looks forward to the release of the Victorian Government’s social and affordable housing strategy.
