In 2019 Committee for Melbourne undertook a review of the 2010 Melbourne Beyond Five Million report, a landmark review of how Melbourne was to cope with the pace of change and population growth. An equitable energy future for all was a key recommendation, which was recently picked up in an expert panel session hosted by Committee member the Nous Group.

The “Beyond 5 Million” review recommended the need to ensure an equitable energy future for residents, business and industry, providing affordable, reliable, dispatchable and environmentally responsible power.

Protecting our energy security means solar, wind, fossil fuels, hydrogen and nuclear may all have a role in Australia’s energy future, but we need to get the policy settings right to ensure cost and carbon emissions fall while supply remains reliable.

The Nous Group recently facilitated a panel session on “Designing a new Energy Future”, well attended by Committee for Melbourne members, stakeholders and industry players.

Facilitated by Tim Orton, Managing Director, Nous Group the panel was represented by:

Audrey Zibelman, CEO of the Australian Energy Market Operator,

Grant King, former CEO of Origin Energy,

Richard Bolt, former Secretary of the Victorian Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources, and

Simon Smith, Head of Nous’ Utilities, Energy, Infrastructure and Resources Practice

The panel explored the steps required to avoid an unpredictable and disruptive transition to zero emissions, and to seize the opportunity to become a global leader in renewable energy.
