Dr Philip Moors

In recent years he has implemented major new programs and capital developments in visitor services, cultural activities and tourism, plant biodiversity and urban ecology research, education, and fundraising and revenue generation.

He has led the creation of the Australian Garden at RBG Cranbourne, a new botanic garden celebrating the diversity and beauty of Australia’s plant-life.

The $14m development of the garden’s first eleven hectares was opened by the Premier, the Hon. Steve Bracks, on 28 May 2006.

During 1985-1988, Dr. Moors was Assistant Director (Research) of the New Zealand Wildlife Service and Department of Conservation and between 1989- 1992, he was Director of the Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union (now Birds Australia). Birds Australia is the major national bird conservation and research organisation, founded in 1901.

Dr. Moors is currently the Chairman, Board of Management, Australian Research Centre for Urban Ecology, a Member, Life Sciences Antarctic Research Advisory Committee, Australian Antarctic Division, a Member, Maud Gibson Trust, and Inaugural President, Botanic Gardens Australia and New Zealand.

Dr. Moors graduated with a BSc with First Class Honours at the Australian National University in 1969, and then later received his PhD in 1974 at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland.

He is also author and joint author of 45 research papers in international and local journals, and editor of a book on the conservation of island birds.

Dr Moors received the Centenary Medal in 2003 for services to the community through conservation and the environment.

He enjoys bird-watching, music, book-binding and book collecting, travel, Antarctica and food.

Dr. Moors is married with two daughters.
