Today the Premier announced a major move forward for Melbourne’s public transport system with a commitment to commence works on the Metro Rail project.
Committee for Melbourne CEO Kate Roffey said “This is a major step forward in making much needed improvements in increasing the capacity of our rail network. The Committee has been a very loud and strong advocate for the need to start works on this project for some years now. Today’s announcement signals a commitment to getting on with the business of building a metropolitan rail system that meets the needs of a 21st Century Melbourne.”
“It is pleasing to see that the Melbourne Metro Rail Authority is being established to actually get to work on this project. While there is more planning and site investigation to be undertaken, the timelines for release of an Expression of Interest process in 2016, and major construction to commence in 2018, give us confidence that this is not just another ‘talk but no action’ strategy”.
The Metro Train Project, along with the proposed PPP package of upgrades to the Dandenong Rail Corridor, are the generational step changes required to improve capacity and transform our rail system from a suburban hub-and-spoke model, to a world class, genuine metropolitan network.
