12.11.2019Local Government Bill Passed

On 12 November 2019 the Parliament of Victoria put in progress the Victorian Local Government Act 2019. This Act replaces the Local Government Act 1989 (other than rating conditions, which are still under review).

Committee for Melbourne made a submission to a review of the Act. Two key recommendations of the Committee were:

To avoid mandating single member wards

To allow for joint council meetings and greater opportunities for collaboration

The Local Government Act review has reflected both recommendations.

Whilst, single member wards appear to not have been mandated, the Act does introduce “a preference for single member wards” which will need to be assessed in practice. The Act will also “enable joint meetings of councils and greater council collaboration and innovation”.

We look forward to reviewing the final legislation and monitor its operation over time.
