Facilitating Build-to-Rent and Affordable Housing

While there is an increasing number of Build-to-Rent (BTR) projects emerging across Australia and growing private sector interest in BTR projects, there is still some uncertainty about whether the foundations are right in Greater Melbourne for significant BTR projects. It is also still uncertain whether BTR developments have the scope to offer affordable housing.

Build-to-Rent Thought Leadership

Urbis and Allens: Build to Rent – the key to unlocking the future liveability of Australia’s cities

Build-to-Rent presents an exciting opportunity for Australia to quickly increase the availability of rental properties to meet current and future demands.

While the #BTR momentum is building, viability in this space is proving to be a challenge, with significant tax and planning policy required to turn the BTR ripple into a wave.

Can the BTR sector in Australia meet the demands of modern society or even provide an attractive long-term investment?

New JLL research paper identifies six customer benefits forming a customer-led value proposition for the emerging BTR sector

As the institutional property investment landscape matures and attitudes toward home ownership and apartment living evolve, demand for BTR products in Australia continues to build. Championing the Greater Melbourne Visitor Experience forum

In November, a Leading Thinker forum was hosted by the Committee for Melbourne and Urbis.  Urbis Director Craig Becconsall discussed the growth of ‘Neighbourhood Tourism’ with a fascinating presentation, benchmarking the latest developments of Greater London and Greater Melbourne.

This was followed by two keynote member presentations by Greater Western Tourism Executive Director, Richard Ponsford and North Link CEO, Chris James which profiled the growth of the Visitor Economy in the Western and Northern and regions of Melbourne and the opportunities ahead.

AGM and honouring our Founder

On 14 November, we held our 33rd Annual General Meeting, generously hosted by National Australia Bank in The Hall. Our AGM was an opportunity for us to report to our members about the progress we have made in our policy advocacy and delivery of the strategic priorities listed in our Melbourne 4.0 Program, launched in May 2017 and our forums and events. With the election of two new Directors, we have reached a full complement of 14 Directors, a diverse group of leaders representing different business sectors, and the knowledge, arts and the for-purpose sectors.  After a short AGM, members had to opportunity to mingle and network. Thank you to those who attended to help us celebrate your, and the Committee’s contribution to our city.

At the AGM, Committee for Melbourne Chair, Scott Tanner was delighted to honour our Founder, Pamela Warrender, with her Life Membership Award Trophy.  While Pamela has been a Life Member for a long time, we had not had an opportunity to give her the beautiful trophy as tangible recognition of her great achievement in founding the Committee and her support of the Committee for almost 40 years. Thank you, Pamela for continuing to be an inspiration for us all and for being our most loyal supporter!
