30.06.2020Transport Taskforce Steering Committee meeting
On Wednesday 13 May, Committee for Melbourne’s Transport Steering Committee met virtually to discuss and debate how the Committee could refine the content of its draft integrated transport report. The social and economic impacts of COVID-19 will not change the report’s basic thrust, but will have an impact on the order in which some of the measures identified in the report might be considered.
The report, which will call for an efficient and sustainable integrated transport system as part of a long-term, strategic blueprint for Greater Melbourne, was drafted prior to the onset of COVID-19 pandemic. While the Steering Committee determined that wholesale changes would not be necessary, it did identify aspects of the report which could be emphasised, given the social and economic repercussions of COVID-19. Some of the areas identified include the need to consider demand management policies, having a renewed focus on neighbourhood development, including densification, and the pursuit of a more environmentally sustainable transport network.
The report, titled Moving Melbourne, is due for release in July 2020.
