06.02.2020Free Tram Zone

The Free Tram Zone (FTZ) extension is back in the news! Since 2017 the Committee has been advocating for a limited and manageable extension of the FTZ to include five “iconic” stops, the Arts Precinct, Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Melbourne Museum and Melbourne and Olympic Parks. You can read our submission to the Parliamentary Inquiry into expanding Melbourne’s Free Tram Zone supporting its extension to these five stops here.

The visitor economy is a major economic driver for Victoria and the tram is the ‘central nervous system’ that coordinates the visitor experience. Including Melbourne’s key visitor institutions in the FTZ will remove confusion around travel in the city and increase visitor numbers at these institutions. It will significantly improve our city’s offering and reputation as a visitor destination without causing a significant reduction in fare box revenue or crowding.
